Rendered in pen, charcoal, and gouache, Michael Isaak's expressive travel sketches truly capture the eeriness of Cambodia's ancient temples. Fun fact--Ta Prohm and Angkor Wat are actually located within one kilometer of each other (thanks, Wikipedia!). I'm loving how the spindly, untamed roots just emerge from and spill into the ruins.



Michael served as an art director for Monsters vs. Aliens, was responsible for the visual development of Bee Movie, and was a layout artist for Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Road to El Dorado, Bartok the Magnificent, and Anastasia.

Jason Scheier, concept designer and visual development artist, has contributed his talents to Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five, Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space, and Megamind. In addition to working at DreamWorks, Jason is a lead concept design instructor at Laguna College of Art and Design. He updates his blog with meticulously detailed sketchbook explorations and digital paintings alike, while also pursuing his interests in travel photography and a graphic novel in the making.



Check out the brooding colors and stunning perspective in his Asian-inspired pieces "Sunshade" and "Summer Rain," on view until September 6th as part of the Moonshine exhibit!

Come draw with us and share in some creative fun this Saturday.  Bring your sketchbook, notepad, and favorite mediums.  Work in the company of other creative minds.

We'll also welcome the acclaimed artist William Stout once again as he signs his new Hallucinations book.  The book is an awesome collection of the artist's fantasy work filled with vibrant ink-and-watercolor works that Stout has done through the years.

Plus, the Battle Milk team will be here to do LIVE PAINTING.  See their cutting edge digital painting and concept work come to life before your eyes.  They will also be signing copies of their newly released book too!

We're cranking out even more Moonshine Artist Spotlights to lead you into the closing reception/book signing on Friday, September 3rd. Today, we're highlighting Nathan Fowkes' impressive body of work. Nathan has served as a background artist on films, such as The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado, How to Train Your Dragon, and Shrek Forever After.



Nathan has immersed himself in a variety of media, from charcoal to acrylic to digital, oftentimes revealing his artistic processes on his blog. His charcoal sketches in particular have a lovely, ethereal Gibson Girl quality to them. Be sure to check them out in person before the Moonshine exhibit ends on September 6th!



And if you're ever looking to brush up on your figure drawing skills, Nathan also leads classes and workshops at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art.

One hundred twenty years ago, Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island.  Lovecraft is considered by many to be one of the most influential twentieth century writers of the classic horror tale.  The basis of Lovecraft's work relies on the fear of the unknown or incomprehensible.  His work has been praised by many modern talents such as Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, HR Giger, and Guillermo Del Toro.

Nucleus is presenting an exhibit tributing the writings of Lovecraft set to open October 16.  Among the contributors are Justin Sweet, Jon Foster, Android Jones, Michael Zulli, and Jeremy Enecio.  Learn more about the exhibit here

This Sunday, we are fortunate to have the uniquely talented special effects artist Jordu Schell on hand to present an amazing collection of his work as he discusses his more than 20 years in the film industry as a leading character & creature designer.  Schell's accomplishments include the Predator franchise, Edward Scissorhands, Alien Resurrection, Men in Black, The X Files, Hulk, Hellboy, 300, Cloverfield, and Avatar among many many others.

If you are involved in or aspiring to be a part of the special effects industry - or are simply a fan of the topic - this will undoubtedly be a treat.  Schell will divulge tips on the industry while touching on the inspiration behind some of his most acclaimed designs complete with a Q & A session.

And one of the most exciting parts of Sunday's event is a live demo by the artist himself.  Schell is contributing to our upcoming H.P. Lovecraftexhibit and he will be working on his contribution to the exhibit right before your very eyes this Sunday.  We really can't wait!

Since the Moonshine exhibit kicks off tomorrow night, I thought it fitting to conclude with a final artist spotlight on Nicolas Weis. He served as a visual development artist on Astro Boy, How to Train Your Dragon, and the upcoming film, The Croods.



"Never Surrender Your Treehouse," pictured above, certainly resonates with all of the artists featured in Moonshine--the idea of never relinquishing your true passions, and making art for the sake of creation, after hours and after dark. Nicolas' painting sets a tone that is both mature and playful, expressing the importance of retaining childlike qualities as we grow older.

If you can't make it to opening night, we hope you'll visit us before the show ends on September 6th--and, of course, on the 3rd for the special closing reception/book signing!

Tang Kheng Heng has designed backgrounds for the films Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, The Road to El Dorado, and The Prince of Egypt--most recently contributing to Shark Tale as lead sequence designer, and to Kung Fu Panda as art director.



In his personal work for Moonshine, Tang references a grimy, futuristic urban landscape, complete with drain pipes and abandoned streets. These subjects are a far cry from those featured in his travel sketches (but are just as fascinating)!

Born in Palma de Mallorca, graphic novel artist and illustrator Marcos Mateu-Mestre has been working in the animation field since 1991. 



Currently at DreamWorks Animation, his film credits include We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story, Balto, The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado, Asterix and the Vikings, and Surf's Up--to which he has contributed 2D backgrounds, 2D layout, storyboarding, visual concept, and development. Marcos has just recently released Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers with Design Studio Press. There's a mysterious energy in all of his work, paired with bold, fluid lines.

Griselda Sastrawinata's artwork is at once elegant and bold, characterized by a regal and feminine color palette.



An Art Center College of Design graduate, Griselda currently works as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation, has contributed fairytale illustrations to Shrek Forever After, and is an instructor at her alma mater, where she teaches VisCom5.



She has also exhibited artwork in Sweet Streets and Power in Numbers 4 here at Nucleus. Don't miss your chance to see Griselda's lovely paintings in Moonshine--they are exquisite in person!

Anna Chambers sent us photos of her Catbus and Totoro plushies! 

Catbus measures 27 inches tall from ears to tail, and the removable Totoro is Velcroed on--making quite a whimsical, almost inseparable pair.

Born and raised in Davis, California, Nate Wragg moved down to Southern California to study animation at the California Institute of the Arts.



Since leaving Cal Arts, he has worked as an illustrator and designer on various productions including Ratatouille and Toy Story 3.  He designed the end title sequence for Ratatouille, and served as production designer for Your Friend the Rat, Pixar's first short film to feature traditional animation. In addition to animation work, Wragg illustrated the children's book Too Many Cooks for Walt Disney publishing, and has exhibited art in the New York Society of Illustrators 50th Annual Showcase.



Marked by humor and color (and the occasional, lovable Yeti and Sasquatch), Nate Wragg's artwork is no stranger to Nucleus. He has contributed fantastic pieces to many past shows, some of which include Ancient Book of Myth and War, Ancient Book of Sex and Science, and Terrible Yellow Eyes.

Today, we're spotlighting the work of the masterful Dominique Louis.



Dominique Louis is an art director and photographer with many years of impressive industry experience. He has brought his dramatic and photorealistic style of lighting and color to the design of feature films, such as DreamWorks' The Croods, Pixar's Ratatouille and Monsters Inc., and Warner Bros.' The Iron Giant.

Born and raised in Burgundy, France, Louis jump-started his career in 1991 as an assistant art director in London, working for a variety of studios like Passion Pictures. He then joined Disney as a background artist on A Goofy Movie, and later moved to California in 1995 to work as a visual concept artist for Warner Bros. Feature Animations. Three years later, he joined Pixar, and had the opportunity to work in the art direction of Monsters Inc. His experience at Pixar included the design of other films such as Finding Nemo, UP, Toy Story 3, and Wall-E, as well as some stage production design for a Monsters Inc. ride at Disney World. Louis has also lent his voice talents to the character Bomb Voyage in The Incredibles.



Having worked on the visual development of several feature projects for Aardman Studios, Blue Sky Animation, LAIKA, and Universal Studios, Louis joined DreamWorks Animation in 2008 where he served as art director for The Croods. Since then, he has also contributed to the visual development of How to Train Your Dragon, The Guardians, and Megamind.

On August 14th, Nucleus is pleased to present Moonshine, an exhibition highlighting personal artwork from 30 enormously talented DreamWorks Animation artists.


"Hide and Seek" by Chris Appelhans

Comprised of art directors, production and character designers, and visual development artists, Moonshine originated as a means to showcase personal work--all compiled into book form. DreamWorks Animation artists featured in this book have contributed to blockbuster films like Coraline, Kung Fu Panda, Prince of Egypt, Monsters Inc., Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Monster House--to name only a few. Many of the contributing artists have also been nominated for an Annie Award, the highest honor given for excellence in animation.

Sponsored by DreamWorks Animation, the Moonshine show exhibits work straight from the book's pages as well as pieces created specifically for this event. In addition to many artists in attendance, opening night festivities include food vendors and special raffle giveaways, with chances to win a private tour of DreamWorks Animation, original sketches, and DreamWorks merchandise.
