Class Description
Photoshop Painting Basics is similar to classes Will Weston has taught at Art Center and in the USC Grad School. The class cuts learning time by directly addressing essential environmental painting issues overlooked by most digital classes. The methods used in this class are feature-level animation techniques that provide a clear route into the world of digital painting for the beginner.  They are not “beginner” techniques, but techniques current to the industry that students can quickly grasp. Students will learn atmospheric perspective, lighting, the use of textures, how to paint different materials, color theory and how to theatrically illuminate environments. We address character painting, along with the application of photos and texture layers with painting layers. This class demystifies digital painting process for new students, and organizes and greatly enhances the skills of more advanced students.

Will Weston’s Photoshop Painting Basics class is one of the few I've taken that successfully combines digital painting tools with painting concepts to become a true digital painting class. Will goes through the basics of how to light objects and scenes, create depth, and paint texture, then teaches students how to pull it all together and create a finished composition with lighting, depth, and mood. The best part about Will's class is that his student’s naturally build off of the foundation that Will puts in place, allowing them to advance rapidly and create more complex and interesting layouts and paintings.

If it weren’t for Will, I honestly wouldn’t have become as comfortable and proficient with digital painting as I am today. Will has broken down the digital painting process into one that is incredibly simple, fast, efficient and applicable to any working field, from animation to gaming and consumer products - you name it. From backgrounds, to props and even characters, his logical and easy step-by-step approach and interwoven design ideologies create a process that is as fast as it is effective.  And let’s not forget that Will himself is an endless source of entertainment (he cracks jokes left and right.) If you want a super fun class to really get you started, or even enhance you, in digital painting, this is the class to take!
