Rising by Junko Mizuno view photos Inspired by the fancifully magical and the eerily curious, artist Mab Graves has created a captivating collection of new paintings and illustrations. “The Runaways” is a series of paintings depicting the journey of several misfit little girls exploring the fragility of independence as they adventure through a haunting new wilderness. Exploring semi-autobiographical themes of freedom, aloneness, and emancipation, the Lost Girls will find themselves amidst the beautiful bleakness of a strange new world as they ultimately discover a freedom we all have – to choose our own families.

Mab Graves is a pop-surrealist artist and illustrator. She spends her days painting in her studio with her partner (photographer, Larry Endicott). They live together in a converted 1800’s tavern in a corner of the dusty Midwest. Her work is inspired deeply by fairy tales and old classic literature. She blames this on her parents who unrelentingly read aloud to her and her three sisters as small impressionable children. Her favorite colors are glitter and clear. And every color. Her dream pet would be a yellow fruit bat, or a nice old hedgehog with an eye patch. She is scared of loud noises, worms, and milk. Graves fondly refers to the characters in her paintings as her "waifs and strays". The artist's hope is to communicate beauty and love in solitude and charm the inner child of those who enjoy her work. |
