Carved Complexities x Paper Forest

For each exhibition, part of our preparation process is promoting the event to local and distant audiences. For Carved Complexities, we looked to the lovely Jaime Zollars who runs Paper Forest, a blog dedicated to sharing all things paper cut. Seeing that it was the perfect niche to spread the word and being the kind supporter that Jaime is, she eagerly jumped at the gesture to give us a plug on her blog:

"I have been a big fan of Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California for some time. The space is great and the openings are always a good time. If you live in the Los Angeles area and are reading this blog, you really need to make a stop tonight for the Carved Complexities show!"

If you haven't had the chance to see Jaime's art or learn about her projects, PUSH Paper and Paper Forest, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of her book or browse her work and sites. See more of Jaime in our upcoming exhibitions and stay tuned for the launch of an all new Paper Forest coming soon. It definitely deserves a bookmark!

Finally if you haven't already, drop by to view Carved Complexities and Line Weight before they conclude on February 26th. Soon after, on March 4th come to the opening reception of Look at This! Look at That! A Dr. Seuss Tribute Show.

Happy Friday!

Robert Valley for Line Weight

Animation artist Robert Valley illustrates the grittiness of urban life through the lenses of distortion and perspective. His figures and scenes are drawn with straight yet seemingly malleable lines, such that his subjects are depicted in a kind of fluid, rhythmic motion. You may recognize his work from Nike, Coca-Cola, Beatles RockBand, Aeon Flux and Gorillaz music videos to name a few. We are thrilled to present an impressive collection of eleven of Robert's original sketches for our current exhibition.

We are super excited to be releasing a Nucleus Exclusive T-shirt with Robert - more details soon to come. Thank you to all of our Nucleus Facebook fans who helped us by voting on the final shirt design!

Lastly, a big THANK YOU to all who came out to enjoy our double opening reception of Line Weight and Carved Complexities this past Saturday! If you weren't able to make it, both of these stunning exhibitions will be on display until February 26th and are available for online viewing HERE and HERE.

Lux Xzymhr for Line Weight

 BLISS

Straddling the line of figurative and abstract, beautiful and grotesque, artist Lux Xzymhr's angel's are the product of contradictions. Composed of flowing lines, some harsh and dense while others remain light and whimsy, her works display an intuitiveness that is both organic and well considered in its design. Lux describes her creative process as a "selfish act":

"When I’m drawing I’m not thinking about what I want to say to anyone. Creating is communication with myself. If I didn’t do it, I would go insane."

Sing Sing Sing, Oh Lil One

For her very first Los Angeles exhibition, Lux has created a collection of eight visually striking and emotionally stirring pieces bursting with expressive line work. Join us at Saturday's dual opening reception of Line Weight and Carved Complexities to check out Lux Xzymhr's creations up close and personal!

Brooks Salzwedel for Line Weight

Grizzly Bear

Brooks Salzwedel is a locally based illustrator and accessories designer whose works center around the opposition between nature and technology. This clash of two extremes is conveyed through dreamlike landscapes, floating islands and ghostly silhouettes. With intricate layerings of  resin, tape and graphite, Brooks has created five delicate yet powerful pieces for our upcoming exhibition: Line Weight.

The Dinosaur and The Statuette

"The five pieces I made for the Line Weight show are a little more illustrative than most of my past works. As opposed to an eerie landscape, I made a focus on graphic animals like eagles, a dinosaur or even a simple statue."

To enjoy all five captivating works from Brooks, join us for the opening reception of Line Weight this Saturday!
